My name is Vivian Tan Li Xian. I was born on the 2nd of March, 1994. Being the first child in a middle income family, I have been blessed to have doting parents and a lovely sister who is two years younger than me. Since young, both of us had been encouraged to read and exposed to learning new things everyday which sums up the reasons of the accumulation of certificates and certificate of attendance for non academic subjects ranging such as Tae Kwan-do, swimming, art, music, public speaking, debate etc.
Since young, I’ve always had the character of aiming high in whatever I do, because I enjoy the feeling of victory when I’ve accomplished something. Hence, I had been rather fortunate too that I was recommended, offered and enrolled to a Malaysian Government sponsored boarding school since Secondary One in Kluang, Johore, after I had my UPSR examinations, which produced results with flying colours due to my effort and hardwork. The past two and a half years had been rather eventful whereby I had to adapt to life away from the comforts of my family to the ever challenging environment and pressure to do well from the school teaching staff to ensure that the grades and prestige of this school do not suffer a decline. None the less, I do believe that the whole environment and dedicated teaching staff had in fact helped me to be the better person I am today.
Nowadays, I am more disciplined when it comes to managing time and able to divide the time for studies and other co-curriculum activities apart from my favorite hobby of reading, from novels to multi-media materials. The inculcation habit of reading since young had enabled me to acquire vast knowledge with regards to being a better person as well as being aware of what is happening politically, geographically, economically, technologically and socially. Among the various kind of reading materials that are present nowadays, my favourite had always been novels. Through the novels that I have read, my imaginations and ideas widened, and hence helping me tackle complications that I face in my daily life in a better way. I do not act like any other rash adolescence who would end their lives whenever they encounter a problem, which I think it’s a waste as there are so many things in store for you in your life. Since we only live once, why waste it?
I have always intended to further my studies but with the ever escalating cost, I really would like to do well in my coming exams and “O” Level exams to ensure that I would be offered the Malaysian Government Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship to further pursue my dreams to be an anesthetist in future. Some may say by studying in the medical field, especially being a doctor or a specialist, you would be wasting your youth, but on my stand it clearly isn’t that way. As the process of learning is continuous as long as we live, I will always indulge myself in my favorite past time of reading and the wealth of knowledge that I could derive shall equip me well in my pursuit to be an anesthetist with a lot of knowledge to fill my patients with.
Although there aren’t many female role models in my family while I was growing up, I didn’t let that stop me for achieving my goals. I am especially interested in music, arts, Tae Kwan-do. Luckily, my parents encouraged those interest. That encouragement drove me to excel. I performed in many public showcases with my piano and some songs that I’ve composed myself, under the tutelage of Yamaha Music School. Besides that, when the passion for art blossomed in me, I was already drawing pictures and portraits of the things I like doing and now, durNing my school term holidays, I earn my pocket money by tutoring students in my former art school and designing lamp covers. The art of self defense, I must say, had also played a great role in my life as I was involved in many tournaments, even to the International Tae Kwan-do tournament held by the Johor Bahru council two years back. The medals I won were not important, but it is the skills and discipline in learning Tae Kwan-do that fascinates me.
“My future depends on what I’m doing in the present – Mahatma Gandhi.” This has been my favourite quote ever since I was in Primary 5, while doing a scrapbook entitled, My Dream. I agree with it because it makes me realize in order to attain what I want, I must work really hard for it. I have seen many cases like Danniella Westbrooke, a famous actress who had everything-looks, fame, wealth, love, but she threw all those away because her love for cocaine was above everything else. She ruined her life with her own hands. However, I idolize Nik Nor Madihah, the SPM candidate who scored more than 20 As in her examinations, although she came from a poor family whereby her father is a fisherman and her home, is in shambles. These incidents showed me that it isn’t what that revolves around me which controls my future, but it is my own determination and effort which would determine my altitude.
